querida oscar y erika,

what an amazing journey you are on! thank you so much for the letter and the photograph. It is up on my wall. looking at it makes me feel very small and far away, as though I am looking into a picture box through a pinhole. it reminded me how much I like images where the intimacy of details is both revealed and withheld.

I am loving reading your blogs and catching up on your trip. sounds simply life-changing! here in oregon we are enjoying warm, humid weather and -- tonight -- a bright pink sky following a very unusual summer rainstorm. aaron and I completed our longest one day bike ride ever a few weeks ago: just under 50 miles. I admire your stamina and strength to bike to south america!!

may many fine days of cycling and enjoyable adventures lie ahead of you, and may the wind be at your back.

warmly,
un abrazo de la norte,
Liz

I'm not looking forward to feeling like my body is part of the hot mess of air around me (well described, amor), but I am looking forward immensely to being in your arms, eating mangos and preparing meals on your MSR stove. I am madly in love with you, Osquitar. :)

I have had the urge to take up sailing for years now. I have largely spent my life on or in the water, and am most fond of those moments after the stinky diesel shuts down and all is quiet. I might know a guy that could help some young lads get into sailing - he's an old Coastie who does sailing on both lakes and oceans. Just sayin' ...

Oscar,

You know, I grew up in a sailing family! I have a picture of my mom taking 1st place in the Newport Ensenada race! Can you believe that? Even had my own little boat when I was growing up. I miss that ;) A co-worker of mine, Greg the tech guy, belongs to a sailing group in the valley somewhere. He does not own his own boat, but gets to participate as a team member on someone else's boat. I'll find out more details for you. It is super fun!

you can sail with me next summer -- jon and i will start our second season sailing this summer and we love it. and we've taken up biking as well. i never thought of biking and sailing as the same but i can understand what you're saying. if you sailed on the ocean the wind is much different than big lake, but we also have sailing hook-ups in seward.

simplicity is the best. we took a course a few summers ago just on simplicity. now that i don't work for the state anymore, simplicity has become much more part of my being.

Hey, Oscar - Good to hear from you. All along, despite the news from Mexico, I have felt confident that you are safe. I look forward to the pictures and like what you wrote above. You are having a great adventure, for certain.
