Oki is partially deaf

Im not gonna lie, it was scramble to leave town on thursday as my fam and I ran around town finishing errands. On top of all this, road conditions were horrid but we managed to avoid ditch diving (a common solution in Alaska to avoid rear ending someone as a result of speeding on icy roads with limited visibility) thanks to my Pops and an all-wheel-drive caravan.

This was the first car inline at waiting to enter the Whittier tunnel.

Fast-forwarding now, the ferry ride from Whittier to Juneau was fairly uneventful, that is assuming you don’t consider talking about the future of Alaska with Representative Sharon Cissna while swaying about because of 10-foot swells. Later that evening my sister and I even went on the top deck where we battled the dark windy wet night by power walking and doing pushups.

Left to right: Erika, Will, and way in the back is Robert who is waving and his friend Bob. More on Robert the Romanian later.

Which brings us to Juneau, AK where the three of us are changing from studed winter tires to our sweet Schwalbe summer treads just outside of Dennis’s (picture to come) condo in the hallway. After getting them pumped up, Erika checks the pressure with her pump and sure enough the pressure is about 20lbs below the max. If your a cyclist you may know where this is going. BANG! Blew up right in my face. The sound of the pop + echo was so massive that when i spoke, Erika said I sounded like a chip monk. I thought so too. We laughed, and now I need to get a new tube.

About two months back i reached out to @zeropergallon to see if they would have any interest in sponsoring us. At the time it was a complete shot in the dark because they had no idea who I was or anything about the tour. Over the course of time, Kit at Zero Per Gallon got to know my sister @_e_bomb and myself via the twitter-sphere. Next thing I know I’m logging into my twitter account post the roller-coaster holidays after what seems to be months, and i see a public reply from @zeropergallon that says he is sending us stickers and patches.Upon receiving the envelope, Erika (my sister) hands me the letter and the first thing I notice is the absolute sincerity and simplicity of a rad letter on some sweet stationary with a photo of the Zero Per Gallon staff. My deep human analog emotions where stirred by the hand written letter, as i wondered what the characters in the photo would be like if we met in real life.

I think this tour, the year 2010 and all that jazz is about acknowledging communities. Doesn’t matter whether you live in the same place or not, share the same interests or have polar opposites ones. I want to know, experience, and document what it means to exist for my life time with those people and characters I encounter. Humans really are after all, social creatures.

1000km

1000km

Two major events happened yesterday, my odometer rolled over 1000km while riding through the fog, two, I realized full circle that I was two days away from my 26th birthday. I can’t explain how it makes me feel but I’ve always disliked how on birthdays there is this underlying expectation that you are suppose to be this incredible center piece of entertainment for those around you. I’d much rather spend the day dropping in on friends, family, and strangers while  aimlessly exploring by bike or foot. That sounds a lot more like an Oki thing to do. I like to orbit.

Ah, almost forgot. I have established a photo collection on flickr that will serve as a central point for all of my digital images to come from the preparation and adventures of the tour.

Oki has bought his ferry ticket

Karyn Lu is the person I talk about corresponding with. She played a important role in Echo Atlanta which is what I talk about possibly creating for the tour. What’s even crazier is that she was already planning a trip to Colombia. Small world!

A sample of the origami heart I talk about in action.
